Hey, I’m Shontaye!

I am passionate about creating inclusive spaces for all children to feel seen, valued, and heard. As someone who is neurodivergent and a parent to a neurodivergent child, this mission is close to my heart!

My journey to becoming an author began in my school, where I worked as a speech therapist. I recognized the lack of diversity in children’s books, but instead of being a bystander, I decided to do something about it. I decided to create the same content I wanted for my own children.

My commitment to increasing diversity in children’s literature led to my own picture books – Liam’s First Cut and The Season of Yes! Everything from the words on the pages to the artwork is intentional about children seeing themselves and embracing their unique qualities. I also train teachers, therapists,  and educators on building diverse libraries and starting meaningful conversations.

I am a proud alumnus of Morgan State University and William Paterson University, where I received my master of science degree in communication disorders. My purpose is rooted in my love for children and will help you, your organization, or your family embrace diversity.
